India’s Only Underground Jyotirlinga Aundha Nagnath, Hingoli

The twelve jyotirlingas are the most significant places of pilgrimage for Hindus in India. Five of them happen to be in Maharashtra. Shiva has been worshipped in these places for centuries. Aundha-Nagnath is one of them. Anudha Nagnath is in the Hingoli District. This pilgrim center is of great significance, since it is considered to be the Eighth (adya), of the 12 jyotirlingas. It is believed that Dharmraj (eldest of Pandav) has constructed this beautiful temple while they were expelled for 14 years from Hastinapur.The temple of Nagnath has exquisite carvings. The temple is of Hemadpanthi architecture and is situated in about 60,000 sq. ft area. Large number of pilgrims visit this temple on shivratri and Vijayadashmi.

Turmeric Capital Of India

Hingoli district has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its specific turmeric variety, known as Vasmat Haldi (Vasmat Turmeric). Vasmat Haldi was granted the GI tag on 30 March 2024. It is the third turmeric variety from Maharashtra to receive this status after Sangli turmeric. The registration is valid until October 2031 and was proposed by the Balasaheb Thackeray Haridra Research and Training Center.

The Balasaheb Thackeray Haridra Research and Training Center was established in October 2022. A total of 36 turmeric varieties are cultivated at the centre, including well-known types like Salem, Pratibha, and Phule Swaroopa. Hingoli is one of the largest exporters of turmeric, exporting around 1,500 metric tonnes annually, which generates a total income of about ₹1,000 crore for the district’s farmers. The district has a turmeric cropped area of nearly 3 lakh hectares, making Hingoli the largest turmeric-growing region, accounting for about 15% of India’s total turmeric cultivation area.

Ligo India – (Laser Interferometer Gravitationl -Wave Observatory)

LIGO Hingoli refers to the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO)-India, a gravitational wave observatory being built in the Hingoli district of Maharashtra.The observatory will be the third of its kind, made to the exact specifications of the twin Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatories (LIGO), in Louisiana and Washington in the U.S. LIGO-India will work in tandem with them.

Hingoli is situated at the northern part of Marathwada in Maharashtra. Borders of Hingoli are surrounded by Akola and Yevotmal in northern side, Parbhani in western side and Nanded at south-eastern side.
The district came into existence by division of Parbhani district on 1st may 1999.
