Turmeric Capital Of India
Hingoli district has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its specific turmeric variety, known as Vasmat Haldi (Vasmat Turmeric). Vasmat Haldi was granted the GI tag on 30 March 2024. It is the third turmeric variety from Maharashtra to receive this status after Sangli turmeric. The registration is valid until October 2031 and was proposed by the Balasaheb Thackeray Haridra Research and Training Center.
The Balasaheb Thackeray Haridra Research and Training Center was established in October 2022. A total of 36 turmeric varieties are cultivated at the centre, including well-known types like Salem, Pratibha, and Phule Swaroopa. Hingoli is one of the largest exporters of turmeric, exporting around 1,500 metric tonnes annually, which generates a total income of about ₹1,000 crore for the district’s farmers. The district has a turmeric cropped area of nearly 3 lakh hectares, making Hingoli the largest turmeric-growing region, accounting for about 15% of India’s total turmeric cultivation area.
